What?   A cycling challenge in memory of an amazing teenager, Paul Davies

Cost?  varies from event to event and all we ask is that you raise a few quid for us in honour of a very special young man, Paul Davies

 

Charismatic, fun, inspirational – just a few of the words we could use to describe Paul Davies.

Paul was diagnosed with cancer when he was just 14 and battled it hard for many years.  He lost his fight in July 2010 aged just 17.

Family and friends fundraise tirelessly for a number of charities that were close to Paul’s heart.  This idea is to raise funds for us and we are so very grateful to Paul’s family for choosing us as the benefiting charity.

So, what is it, do I hear you ask?

Well, as the title suggests it is a bike team.

As part of the 2013 Pedal for Scotland bike ride from Glasgow to Edinburgh there were 128 cyclists in our Team Pedal 4 Paul – raising funds for It’s Good 2 Give in honour of a very special, charismatic and inspirational young man, Paul Davies.
The 2012 Team Pedal for Paul had a wonderful 67 cyclists in it. So we almost managed to double our numbers.

For 2014 we’d like to see 150 cyclists in our team and it can be done.

This year sees us suggesting that you join any organised cycling event you fancy and then pledging to raise a few quid for us – any amount at all is welcomed by us.

The biggest cycling event is Pedal for Scotland cycling from Glasgow to Edinburgh on Sunday 7 September – full information can be found here.

Once you sign up to your event, let us know you are going to raise some funds for us and let us know if you want a Pedal 4 Paul t-shirt. We will give you information on how to set up an online giving page.

All monies raised will be used at our Ripple Retreat for an item or items that will recognise Paul’s achievements and character in his young life – a fitting legacy for a special young man.

And as one of the requirements of joining the team is to wear odd socks (Paul always wore odd socks!) we also suggest saving up pennies, pounds, fifty pences, notes in a sock!

I can tell you that every single cyclist doing it for us in 2012 and 2013  has a huge sense of achievement.

Pedal for Paul

So, what is it, do I hear you ask?

Well, as the title suggests it is a bike ride.  We want to get between 50 and 100 cyclists to join us and fundraise for us in the Pedal for Scotland bike ride 2012.  That gives us just over a year to recruit, train and raise lots of money in Paul’s honour.

The bike ride takes place on a Sunday in September and as soon as we know the date of the 2012 ride we will update this page.

It’s a 51 mile ride between Glasgow and Edinburgh – you can do it to beat your own personal best, or just enjoy a day ‘s cycle out stopping at the various designated stops en route – Linlithgow Palace is one – if it’s a nice day, what better place for a quick picnic?

We will provide t shirts and goody bags and one of the team is a bike expert and has offered to look at your bike in advance of the ride.

Pedal for Scotland Bike Ride

It’s not a marathon, or climbing Everest, but it was a challenge for me. My bike had sat in the basement for so long, the first thing I had to do was take it to the repair shop to replace the rotten tyres…

I’ve always insisted I hated cycling. It was too hard, Edinburgh has too many hills, I’d rather walk. And then I signed up for the Pedal for Scotland Challenge for It’s Good 2 Give. I fixed my bike up, opened an online giving account and got sent some padded cycling shorts for Easter – a lifesaver. I was ready for my first long training cycle in the Pentlands.

It was a bit near the end that did it. Hanging on for dear life, rattling down a narrow track, you sweep round and suddenly you’re alongside a cliff-edged loch. It’s stunning, and you can’t get there by car – I’d never have found it without my bike. I was hooked.

I only did a few 20-mile or more training rides, and even these impressed my cyclist dad, who openly admitted he didn’t think I’d be able to do it.  What really cemented the habit was cycling everywhere – to work, to the station, to friend’s houses. Suddenly it took half the time to get anywhere.

The challenge itself was hilarious, and surprisingly painless. Emily (another IG2G trustee) and I stuck together throughout, alternately motivating and laughing at each other. She was without padded pants, and felt it!

We took it slowly; it was more important for us to enjoy the ride than beat anyone else. We’d never done anything like this before so whatever time we made was a personal best. We stopped at each rest point, taking full advantage of the snacks the organisers provided!

The route is well thought out, and goes through some gorgeous countryside. One thing that amazed me when I first got back on a bike is how quickly you can leave the centre of town and quickly be surrounded by greenery, in a totally different landscape. Stopping in Linlithgow Castle grounds was a great moment, and there was a surprising amount of downhill – I’d not like to cycle back the other way! The only disheartening thing was seeing keen beans cycling back past us to Glasgow when we were only at mile 40…

After over 50 miles, the last stretch is exhilarating. You can feel the end approaching, even without the distance markers – there’s a very carnival atmosphere. As you come through the finishing posts, total strangers cheered us. It felt like I’d really achieved something, something I’d been genuinely sceptical about being able to do.

Emily and I talked grandly about doing other cycle challenges, but since then all I’ve done is continue to cycle around town. Until I got a puncture a month ago, that is. Now fixing that’s going to be a challenge

Runs, walks, challenges

As newbies we left it a bit late to get places in this years’ runs and walks as a charity.  However if anyone knows of someone who has a place in any run and is looking for a charity to run for send them our way!  Any amount of money they raise for us will be most appreciated.   I know that one of our long time supporters Carole Spence is running the marathon again this year and this time for us.   And yesterday the 2 Gillians signed up for the Edinburgh half marathon.  One of our trustees is running the Edinburgh 10k – so we have at least one runner in the big runs this year!  Hey, its a start.

Whether there is one person or a hundred people running for us we still need volunteers to cheer them on.  It is super encouraging if you hear your  name shouted from the spectators and be welcomed in at the end.  I will be there for them all and hope you might join me – or run and be shouted at!

This year I aim to cycle the Pedal for Scotland bike ride Glasgow to Edinburgh in September – again we have a few others cycling for It’s Good 2 Give – join us if you dare….

Our young supporters are working hard too with ideas – Lucy Kendrew is already planning a week of crazy challenges – abseiling the Forth Rail Bridge, swimming with the sharks at Deep See World, parachuting out a plane – just three of her planned tasks – better her than me, I can tell you!

And a big one this – we plan to arrange a trip to Kilimanjaro in 2013 – it would be good to get a team of 20 together for this – let me know if you want to take part.  There is a lot of fundraising to be done for this and here’s the crucial bit for us – you have to pay the personal bit yourself.  That can be around £2000 and then raise £2000 in addition.  Final figures will be announced in the next couple of months but I think we will get enough people who want to do it and we are giving them plenty of time to save up!
